Switch Is Very Close To Matching Lifetime PS2 Sales In The US

The Nintendo Switch is getting closer to matching the PlayStation 2 for lifetime sales in the US. Mat Piscatella of the research firm Circana reported that the Switch is only 1.1 million units behind PS2 for lifetime sales domestically.

Globally, it's a bit of a different story. Nintendo recently reported that Switch sales through June 30 stood at 143.42 million units. The PS2 is understood to be the best-selling home console of all time with about 155 million units sold.

Nintendo is forecasting to sell 13.5 million Switch consoles during its current fiscal year that ends on March 31, 2025. With 2.1 million sold already this fiscal year, that leaves 11.4 million to go to reach the target. If Nintendo can achieve that, then Switch sales would reach 154.4 million--just 600,000 shy of the PS2's estimated global record of 155 million.

In the US, PS5 is still 7% ahead of PS4 LTD and Switch is only 1.1M units behind PlayStation 2 in lifetime sales.Even Xbox Series (for all its known challenges) is holding close to Xbox 360's LTD pace (and will get a CF25 boost). No, the console market isn't doomed. Sheesh.

Looking at other platforms, PS5 sales in the US are 7% ahead of the PS4 life-to-date over a similar period of time, while Xbox Series X|S sales are "holding close" to the life-to-date pace of the Xbox 360 era, Piscatella said. He noted that Xbox Series X|S sales (and presumably PS5 as well) will get a boost from College Football 25, a highly anticipated game that was only released on new-generation consoles.

Nintendo is cooking up its next console, and many are wondering when the company will officially unveil and discuss it. We still don't know for sure, but Nintendo has said it should be revealed by April 2025.
